EU LCS is in trouble and everybody from Riot Games to fans, players, teams, and everybody else knows that. The current format of the competition is not something that attracts a lot of fans in Europe. That is not the case only in Europe because fans in North America have reacted the same on the NA LCS. Because of that, Riot Games has reacted quickly and they introduced the changes for the competition that will be applied from the start of 2018.
For North America, the safest way of making sure that the competition success is to introduce the franchise system to the competition which Riot did. However, franchises are not something that would work in Europe and because of that, Riot needs to find some other examples for EU LCS. Otherwise, this competition and League of Legends, in general, might be in serious problems, at least in Europe.
Organizations Leaving Europe
When Riot Games announced the changes for the NA LCS, many were convinced that it was a good move for NA LCS. However, some of the world’s biggest League of Legends teams are wondering what is happening with Europe and why Riot is not making any changes to that competition. Riot Games has refused to talk about this changes which led several teams to make very big moves.
Considering such a lack of information, it was completely expected to see the response from some of the biggest LoL teams from Europe. According to the story that ESPN broke a couple of days ago, several European League of Legends teams have applied for permission to leave EU LCS and join NA LCS. Those teams are G2 Esports, Splyce, Misfits, and Fnatic. If this turns out to be true, this will be a huge loss for EU LCS, the one from which it will be very hard to recover.
All of this has made European League of Legends fans extremely mad. Their biggest concern is the fact that Riot Games seems to be unable to find the right model for the competition that would suit the needs and the wishes of fans in Europe. However, that might be changing soon because there are some reports from Riot that say that they might have found the right model for new EU LCS.
Finding the Right Model
According to those reports, Riot Games is currently looking at the model of UEFA Champions League for the EU LCS. There were those who were saying that franchises would be a good solution for European competition. However, relegation has been one of the main features of sports in Europe and it would be very hard for the fans to get used to a competition without that feature.
According to those reports, the new format of EU LCS would do exactly the same as Champions League – take several top teams from the best national leagues and put them together to fight for the trophy. These reports have not revealed any details about the possible format of the competition but the following weeks will bring more information about this issue because it is finally the time for Riot Games to react and to modernize EU LCS.
