Intel Extreme Masters Sydney 2017 Day 2 Recap: Semifinalists Announced

Ivan Potocki | May 7, 2017 | Counter-Strike | No Comments

The Day Two of the Intel Extreme Masters Sydney 2017 has been completed. After two days of the competition, we have a clear idea of the teams that will be playing in the semi-finals as well as those that were eliminated from the competition. From the list of the teams in the semi-finals, we can already conclude that the upcoming two matches will be some of the most interesting matches this season.

ViCi Gaming’s Run Comes to an End

Day two of the IEM Sydney 2017 started with the match between Renegades and ViCi Gaming. ViCi Gaming did not have a very good tournament, and the match against Renegades had the potential to bring them some chances for advancing to the next stage. However, that did not happen as Renegades proved to be a much better contender. ViCi Gaming had good periods in that match by winning several consecutive rounds and by doing well economically. However, that did not have much influence on the final outcome, as Renegades managed to win with the score 16:5.

However, Renegades were not able to repeat that kind of performance in their second match when they faced OpTic Gaming. OpTic Gaming steady held the T side, and they managed to finish the first half with the score 11:4. In the second round, OpTic Gaming was equally convincing, and the won the match with the score 16:4. With that win, OpTic Gaming became the first team that secured their spot in the semi-finals even though they still had another match to play.

FaZe Clan Prevails against North

The third match of the day featured FaZe Clan going against North. This was the only match of the day that was decided in overtime. FaZe Clan dominated in the first half of the encounter in which they gained the advantage of 11:4.

However, with the aggressive style of play, North managed to come back and win the second half with the same result. However, North put on a very bad performance at the T side in the overtime allowing FaZe Clan to claim the victory in the overtime and win the entire match.

Astralis vs. SK Gaming

The following match between SK Gaming and Astralis was the one everybody wanted to see happen. Astralis started the match much better, and at the end of the first half, they had the advantage of 6:9. However, SK Gaming came back in the second half in which they displayed significant dominance, and they won the second half with 16:12.

After that, it was time for Chiefs eSports Club to face North in what proved to be the match of very little importance. In the end, Chiefs claimed the victory with the score 16:13 after trailing 5:10 after the first half time. However, Australians impressively won the pistol round, and with that, they managed to secure the win.

Boosting Their Positions

The following match was played between FaZe Clan and OpTic Gaming. Both teams have already secured their spots in the semi-finals. This match was mostly about which team will get the better seeding for the semi-finals. In the end, FaZe Clan managed to secure the win as it was expected.

The next match, the one between Astralis and Renegades, proved to be one of the quickest so far as Astralis won with the score 16:3.

Semi-finalists Announced

The final match of Day Two of IEM Sydney 2017 was the match between OpTic Gaming and Chiefs. Even before the match, it was clear that OpTic Gaming will be going to the semi-finals. On the other hand it was apparent that Chiefs will be eliminated from the competition. This match just confirmed those facts as OpTic Gaming managed to win without any serious difficulties.

With the end of Day Two of IEM Sydney 2017, it became clear that SK Gaming, Astralis, OpTic Gaming, and FaZe Clan will be playing in the semi-finals. Chiefs eSports, Renegades, North, and ViCi Gaming have been eliminated from the competition.
