The Subaru Invitational Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament was played during the past week. On Sunday, it was time for the grand finals of the tournament in which big champions SK Gaming faced Cloud9.
When the names of the teams competing in the final were revealed, many believed that SK Gaming will not have any problems winning yet another title. However, that was very far from what actually happened in the final skirmish of this tournament. In an unexpected turn of events, Cloud9 managed to defeat SK Gaming and win the title at the Subaru Invitational 2017.
Without a Defeat
Before the grand final match against SK Gaming, Cloud9 had an amazing tournament. They managed to defeat all their opponents with the score 2-0. This means that they were not defeated in any of the maps that they have played during those matches.
Despite that, SK Gaming was still a big favorite for winning the title. However, in the finals, Cloud9 proved that amazing performances in the previous rounds of this tournament were not a coincidence. They managed to defeat SK Gaming in the final match without allowing them to claim even a single win in that match. This was an even more impressive fact than the win itself.
Path to the Finals
For Cloud9, the Subaru Invitational started with the match against NRG eSports. They did not have any problems in that match. In the first map, Cloud9 displayed huge dominance, and in the end, they won the map with the score 16:3. However, in the second game, NRG eSports put up stronger resistance. Cloud9 still managed to win the second round as well with the score 16:9.
The next day, it was time for Cloud9 to face Counter Logic Gaming in the semi-finals of the tournament. The match against Counter Logic Gaming proved to be the toughest for Cloud9 at this tournament. Counter Logic Gaming somehow managed to resist all the attacks from Cloud9.
The first map of the semi-final match was almost taken to the overtime, but a final push from Cloud9 before the end of the game One brought them the necessary advantage. They turned this advantage into the win of the first map with the score 16:14. In their second map of the semifinal match, Cloud9 had a bigger control, and eventually, they managed to win there as well with the score 16:12.
Defeating the Champions
The final confrontation saw Cloud9 and SK Gaming opening the match on the de_Cobblestone which is one of the favorite maps for SK Gaming. However, Cloud9 managed to neutralize SK Gaming’s efforts on that map and eventually win with the score 16:12.
As the second map was the last lifeline for SK Gaming in the final match, it was expected they would give it all in that game. However, despite the best efforts from SK Gaming in the second game, Cloud9 managed to claim another victory. The second game was very close to the overtime as the final score ended up being 16:14 in favor of Cloud9.
With that, Cloud9 becomes the Subaru Invitational Champion and claims an important title and the $10,000 first prize. More importantly, they demonstrated they have a lot to offer in the world of competitive gaming.
