Over the past couple months, Blizzard has been silent when it comes to their Overwatch League. However, in the last couple of weeks there are some major news. It has been said that two NFL franchises have purchased two spots in the League. Also, Major League Gaming has created a new division. It will be handling with the organization of Overwatch League and other Overwatch tournaments.
However, on the other side of the spectrum, teams and eSports organizations have been far from impressed with Blizzard’s silence on the matter. That had changed today when Blizzard released a statement on this issue. Many see this statement as an answer to the piece that ESPN published about teams being unwilling to participate in the Overwatch League.
Creating a Sustainable Ecosystem
Blizzard’s statement indicated that they have been working on creating an ecosystem for Overwatch. For the fans that will be sustainable and exciting for all involved. Organizing that kind of tournaments requires a lot of effort and devotion. Besides that, Blizzard has also apparently responded to the issue of several eSports organizations dropping their Overwatch teams. They said that there is no widespread departure from Overwatch title in eSports industry. Apparently, for Blizzard, the timing of the announcement of the five teams that dropped their Overwatch teams. They stated it was nothing more than a coincidence.
One of the biggest issues that the fans and eSports organizations have with Overwatch League is the prize that has been rumored for the spot in the league. According to those rumors, the prize for the spot in the Overwatch League is no less than $20 million. With that news circulating, many teams have come to think that it will be financially almost impossible for them to obtain a spot in that league.
Because of that, Blizzard has been under constant pressure from the fans. Even though many expected that this press release from Blizzard will also say something about participation costs, that was not the case. Blizzard is yet to officially speak about this issue.
At the same time, this statement has also indicated that over the last couple of months, there has been a lot of misinformation. These false rumors have been deliberately spread in order to damage the Blizzard and Overwatch in general.
Blizzard said that they will be releasing new information about the Overwatch League. The organization of the tournament moves forward. During the last BlizzCon in November 2016, Blizzard officials have announced that they will be launching the Overwatch League. However, since then, Blizzard has not come out publicly with much information about their new competition. This allowed rumors to spread freely.
Looking from this perspective, Blizzard also had some missteps in this process as well. The fact that we have almost no information about the Overwatch League. It is around two months before it scheduled start might be their biggest omission so far.
And, if we were to judge from the experience with Blizzard so far when it comes to the Overwatch League, we should not hope for much new information anytime soon.
